"Earth, Atmosphere, Heavens.
We meditate on the sacred light of the effulgent Source.
May That inspire our thoughts."
The Gayatri Mantra is the foremost, highest and most revered of mantras in Hinduism; it has now become widely known and loved in the west as well. Called "the Mother of the Vedas" it is regarded as Hinduism's most powerful mantra. You can find audio clips of the chanting of this mantra on many different websites; the second link below has several. The most beautiful version I've heard is on a CD by Vyaas Houston of the American Sanskrit Institute (link below).
If you want the benefits of chanting mantra, you can hardly do better than to choose Gayatri Mantra! It is truly the best, the mother of all mantras.
One rishi writes about Gayatri Mantra:
"The Gayatri Mantra does not belong to any particular sect of worship or it is not restricted to any certain community. It is universal, for the whole world. It contains in it the culture not of any particular society, but the culture of humanity. The Gayatri Mantra is a treasure and heritage that belongs to the whole of humanity without exclusion."
